Anthropic Launches Claude Design, a Prompt-to-Prototype Tool That Challenges Figma's Design Dominance

Velotip · 2026-04-21

Anthropic has launched Claude Design, a new product from its Anthropic Labs division, enabling users to generate polished visual interfaces and interactive prototypes directly from natural language prompts. The release, announced April 21, 2026, positions the company in direct competition with established design platforms, most notably Figma.

Claude Design allows product teams, designers, and developers to describe a user interface in plain text and receive a visually refined prototype in response — collapsing the traditional workflow that requires iterating between a designer in Figma and an engineer translating those mockups into code. The tool is part of Anthropic's broader effort to expand Claude's capabilities beyond text-based tasks into multimodal, production-ready outputs.

The product arrives as generative AI tools continue to encroach on professional design workflows. Competitors including Google, OpenAI, and a range of specialized startups have each introduced tools that automate portions of the UI/UX pipeline. Claude Design's differentiator, according to Anthropic, lies in its combination of visual quality, responsiveness to nuanced prompts, and integration with Anthropic's existing API ecosystem, allowing enterprise customers to embed the tool into their existing development environments.

For Figma, the launch represents a new category of competitive pressure. While Figma has introduced its own AI-assisted design features, Claude Design targets an earlier stage of the workflow — ideation and rapid prototyping — where speed and accessibility may outweigh the fidelity advantages of a dedicated design environment. Design teams at larger organizations, however, are expected to continue relying on Figma's collaboration and handoff infrastructure for production work.

Claude Design is available as part of Anthropic Labs, the company's experimental products arm, which has historically served as a testing ground for features before broader commercial rollout. Pricing and availability details for enterprise tiers had not been fully disclosed at time of publication.

The launch also coincides with the company's expanded investment relationship with Amazon, suggesting Anthropic is moving aggressively to broaden its product surface area while its financial backing grows.
