Former DeepMind Researcher David Silver Raises $1.1 Billion for AI Lab Pursuing Human-Free Machine Learning

Velotip · 2026-04-28

Ineffable Intelligence, a British artificial intelligence laboratory founded by David Silver, the former DeepMind researcher credited with developing AlphaGo and AlphaZero, has secured $1.1 billion in funding at a valuation of $5.1 billion. The raise, announced this week, is one of the largest early-stage funding rounds in European AI history and arrives just months after the company was established.

Silver spent years at DeepMind pioneering reinforcement learning techniques that enabled machines to master games including chess, shogi, and Go without being given human-provided examples of play. Ineffable Intelligence is applying a similar foundational philosophy to the broader challenge of general-purpose artificial intelligence. The company's central thesis is that AI systems trained primarily on human-generated data inherit human-like cognitive limitations and biases that constrain their ultimate capabilities.

Rather than following the large language model paradigm — in which vast corpora of human text are used to train models such as GPT-4 and Claude — Ineffable Intelligence is pursuing systems that develop capabilities through self-directed exploration of environments, learning from interaction rather than imitation. The approach draws heavily on reinforcement learning and self-play methodologies Silver helped establish at DeepMind, scaled toward more general domains than board games.

The company has not disclosed specific architectural details or a public release timeline. It is headquartered in London and is expected to compete in the frontier model space alongside OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, Silver's former employer.

Silver's departure from DeepMind earlier this year drew considerable attention in the AI research community. His 2016 work on AlphaGo, which defeated world champion Go player Lee Sedol — a result once considered decades away — and AlphaZero in 2017, which independently mastered multiple board games at superhuman levels without any prior human game data, are widely regarded as watershed moments in the field.

The $5.1 billion valuation places Ineffable Intelligence among the most highly valued pre-product AI startups globally. The scale of investor interest reflects continued appetite for frontier AI research led by scientists with established records of breakthrough results, even in the absence of commercial products or published technical documentation.
