Google Expands Gemini AI Integration in Chrome to Seven New Countries Across Asia and Pacific

Google has begun rolling out its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant directly within the Chrome browser to users in seven additional countries, significantly expanding the geographic reach of its integrated AI browsing experience. The countries receiving access are Australia, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam.

The expansion, announced on April 20, 2026, brings Gemini's in-browser capabilities to a combined population of hundreds of millions of internet users across the Asia-Pacific region. Google is deploying the feature on both desktop and iOS platforms in all seven countries, with the exception of Japan, where the rollout is limited to desktop only. The company did not elaborate on the reason for the exclusion of iOS in Japan.

Gemini in Chrome allows users to interact with an AI assistant directly within the browser interface without navigating to a separate application or tab. Capabilities include summarizing web pages, answering questions about content currently displayed in the browser, and assisting with tasks such as drafting text or conducting research across multiple sources. The integration is designed to reduce the friction between passive browsing and active AI-assisted work.

The seven-country expansion follows an earlier rollout in select English-speaking markets and represents Google's effort to compete with Microsoft's Copilot, which is integrated into the Edge browser and has been available in multiple markets for some time. The browser has historically served as a crucial battleground for technology companies seeking to shape user behavior and establish default AI touchpoints in daily digital life.

Google has been accelerating the deployment of Gemini across its product ecosystem, embedding the model in Search, Workspace applications, Android devices, and now Chrome, as the company seeks to demonstrate that its AI capabilities are deeply woven into the products that billions of people already use. The strategy stands in contrast to standalone AI assistant applications, which require users to change their existing habits.

The rollout in Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam reflects growing recognition among technology companies that the next large wave of AI adoption is likely to come from emerging markets, where mobile internet penetration is high and populations are relatively young. Google has not announced specific timelines for further geographic expansions of Gemini in Chrome.
